Bloom Where You're Planted

I had to use a plant metaphor for this one—because some people may not know, I’m a bit of a plant nerd. I earned an associate’s degree in horticulture and spent four years working in the green industry before joining the Navy. When I was assigned the rate of Information Systems Technician (IT), I had no background in computers and honestly had no idea what I was doing—but I made it work. Now, I’m working as a bookkeeper at Mettle Ops. It’s not the path I originally pictured, but in a way, it all still connects.

April is a natural reminder of growth. Everything around us is starting to come back to life, but none of it happens overnight. What we see now is the result of steady care over time—sunlight, water, patience—long before anything breaks through the surface.

That idea shows up in life more than we think. “Bloom where you’re planted” doesn’t mean settling or staying stuck. It means making the most of where you are right now, even if it looks different than what you planned. It means showing up, doing the work, and trusting that consistency matters.

Looking back, each season served a purpose. The green industry taught me how growth actually works—slow, steady, and dependent on good systems. The Navy reinforced discipline and pushed me into something completely unfamiliar, where I had to learn quickly and adapt. Bookkeeping now has its own rhythm—structure, accuracy, and consistency. Different environments, same core principle: what you consistently put in matters.

Not every season is about visible progress. Some are about building roots—developing skills, learning patience, and getting stronger in ways that aren’t obvious right away. Plants don’t wait for perfect conditions to grow—they use what they have and keep going.

Wherever you find yourself this April—whether it feels like a growth season or just maintenance mode—there’s still progress happening. Even if it’s not obvious yet.
