God’s Goodness

ree

I love this hymn and the powerful truths it holds—it draws my heart to focus on God’s character rather than the circumstances of life. The words, grounded in God’s truth, have often brought comfort in times of struggle, pain, or uncertainty. His faithfulness, love, and presence sustain us—even when life feels overwhelming.

What a glorious hope we have in Him—one that nourishes our souls to the very depths. It’s this hope that gives us the strength to persevere each day, trusting that He is always at work, even when we cannot see it.

He Will Hold Me Fast, Song by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Selah ‧ 2020

Looking back, I can see Your fingerprints

Upon my life, always seeking my best

There were times when Your way would make no sense

But as You said, You have never left

CHORUS:

You are always good, You are only good

You are always good to me

Though my eyes can't see, help my heart believe

You are always, only good

Looking in, I can see my frailty

My sin is great, and my strength is so small

Still You stay, and Your mercy shelters me

You hold my hand, and You hear my call

Looking up, I can see Your sympathy

I doubt myself, but I'm sure of Your love

Lavish grace was poured out at Calvary

Securing me for our home above

You are always good

You are good

Only good

You are good

You are God

The first verse is rooted in the truth of Romans 8:28–29: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

Notice the promise: “all things work for good”—not just some. Even when we don’t see clear evidence of God’s hand in our day-to-day lives, we can trust that He is at work, because His Word assures us of it.

Often, it’s only in hindsight that we recognize how God was at work, shaping our circumstances for our good and His glory. That perspective strengthens our faith and encourages us to keep trusting Him, even when the road ahead is uncertain.

There are seasons when life doesn’t make sense, but I’m reminded of this truth: our understanding is not a prerequisite for trusting God. He is always at work, strengthening, sustaining, and guiding us, even when we cannot see or understand the full picture.

As the lyrics say, “Though my eyes can’t see, help my heart believe.” That’s my prayer—that God would do the deep, quiet work in my heart to help me cling to His unchanging character.

The chorus of this hymn is a powerful promise, repeated after every verse: God is ALWAYS and ONLY good. Scripture declares, “There is none good but God.” No matter how I feel or what I may think in the moment, His character does not change. He remains faithful, constant, and true.
