Benefits of Professional Development

Having a master’s degree, I am aware of the benefits of education. Most jobs require some form of tertiary education or vocational training for a successful career. But what about after that? A typical person who pursues education or training after high school completes it by the age of 25, right before they move into a career defining position. Some jobs do provide on the job training, but again, that is usually at the beginning of taking a position. But what about afterward, 5, 10, or 20 years later? How does professional development fit into a person’s career?

Positions evolve. What a person may be doing at the beginning of the role usually changes based on the accommodation of their strengths, restructuring of the department, or a variety of other reasons. Depending on whether it was included in the original training or educational program and how long ago that was, training is most likely necessary to understand and complete the new responsibilities. It may be as simple as doing a training video or seminar but may move into acquiring a certification or pursuing another degree.

People evolve. What a person is doing now may not actually suit their strengths or passions. As they move into a role or a new company and see how roles play out over time, many realize they are in the wrong role and want to switch, but they don’t have the necessary training or education to succeed. Pursuing the necessary requirements allows a person to move into a career that will be fulfilling and successful.

Culture evolves. Trends change, technology advances, procedures and requirements are constantly updating. To stay up to date, it is vital to continue to learn and grow. Not only does professional development enhance a person’s capabilities, but it allows for networking opportunities. Meeting people through classes or trainings, being involved in an industry organization, or making connections with people during day-to-day operations, networking is a valuable resource. It is critical to stay abreast of industry changes, updates, and trends and the best way to do that is to pursue professional development.
