Your attention is more powerful than you may realize. People notice if you are otherwise occupied despite being physically present. It’s not a good look to others, and it’s a bad representation of yourself and anyone/anything you are affiliated with. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to let multiple tasks fly through your mind when it should be focusing on the topic at hand. Multitasking can be productive, but sometimes being physically and mentally present communicates more than increased productivity. It’s important to show that you care by staying engaged in meetings or when having conversations with others.
Giving your undivided attention is a method of showing respect, especially in a professional environment. I want my presence to show intentional respect and genuine care. Staying intentionally engaged and listening actively communicates that we value the speaker and the thought behind his message. Both are important, and giving your undivided attention goes a long way to communicate that.
Bottom Line: Be physically and mentally present intentionally.
