As Unto the Lord

Life has a way of pulling our focus in multiple directions. People disappoint us. Circumstances frustrate us. Stress drains us. Delays discourage us. Sometimes we spend a lot of energy reacting to people and situations that we lose sight of the One we are living for.
As a Christian, I am called to live according to Colossians 3:23: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” This verse serves as a powerful reminder that our attitude, our work ethic, our responses, our relationships, and even our daily responsibilities are not ultimately about people … they are about God.
It is easy to serve God when life is going smoothly. It is much more difficult when:
1. People misunderstand or mistreat us.
2. Circumstances feel unfair.
3. Prayers seem unanswered.
4. Stress increases.
5. Difficult people test our patience.
…. But God never told us to base our obedience on our circumstances. He told us to keep our eyes focused on Him.
Too often, we allow people to determine our joy, our attitude, and our spiritual direction. One harsh comment can ruin our day. One disappointment can steal our peace. One difficult situation can distract us from our purpose.
This is why we must constantly remind ourselves who we are living for!
We are not living for the applause or approval of others. In fact, one of the greatest obstacles to fully living for the Lord is the desire to be noticed, appreciated, understood, recognized, or valued by people. While those desires are natural, they can easily shift our focus away from God and onto the opinions of others.
Living “as unto the Lord” means:
· Serving faithfully even when nobody notices
· Choosing kindness regardless of how others respond to us
· Working with excellence even when others do the bare minimum
· Being obedient no matter the cost
Throughout Scripture, we see powerful examples of people who remained focused on God despite difficult circumstances. Paul wrote many of his letters while sitting in prison, yet his focus remained on the Lord. Joseph continued honoring God even after being betrayed by his own brothers. Daniel stayed faithful even when facing the threat of death. Jesus Himself endured rejection, suffering, and injustice without ever losing sight of His Father’s will.
Circumstances changed for all of them, but God never changed!
The same is true for us today. When our focus remains fixed only on temporary problems, life can quickly become overwhelming. But when we remember that our lives belong to God and that our purpose is eternal, it changes how we respond to everything around us.
People will disappoint us. Circumstances will change. Difficult seasons will come. But through it all, God remains faithful.
