In the Valley of Trouble: There Is Always Hope

This past week, I heard a sermon by Dr. Gordon Dickson called “A Door of Hope,” based on Hosea 2:15:

“And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.” (bold italics, my emphasis added)

He explained that the Achor means “Trouble.” What a beautiful reminder that wherever there is trouble, there is always hope. If we are honest, most of us are in a valley, coming out of one, or heading toward another one. Trouble is part of life, but as Christians, we never face it alone.

Often, when we are struggling, we pray, “God, fix this”, “Change this,” or “Take this away.” Sometimes He does. But other times, while we are waiting for the circumstances to change, God is working in our hearts to change us. The valley can teach us to pray differently, trust more deeply, and recognize how much we truly need Him.

Focus matters! We can allow our difficulties to consume our thoughts, or we can choose to see our circumstances through hope-filled eyes. Hope doesn't mean ignoring the reality of our troubles. It means keeping our eyes on our faithful and loving Lord while we walk through them.

Sometimes, the door of hope is right there in the middle of the valley. We know it exists because God has promised to provide it … are we looking for it?
