If You Got Hit by a Bus Tomorrow

Throughout my career, I’ve heard the phrase, “Just in case you get hit by a bus tomorrow.” It may sound a little harsh, but the message behind it is important. No organization should rely on one person being the only one who knows how to perform a critical task.

We’ve all developed processes, shortcuts, and knowledge that make us effective in our roles. The problem arises when that information exists only in our heads. If someone is out unexpectedly, takes a new opportunity, or retires, that knowledge can leave with them.

One concept I recently learned about in my Operations Strategy class is the importance of building resilient systems. Strong organizations don’t depend on individuals—they depend on processes that can continue even when key people are unavailable.

Taking the time to document procedures, cross-train coworkers, and share knowledge may not seem exciting, but it can prevent major disruptions down the road. A team is strongest when everyone helps ensure that important information is accessible to others.

After all, none of us plans on getting hit by a bus tomorrow—but it’s a good idea to be prepared just in case.
